MARINE CORPS AIR STATION FUTENMA, Okinawa, Japan - Marine Corps Air Station Futenma hosted its annual Futenma Flight Line Fair for over 22,000 attendees from October 5-6.
MCAS Futenma welcomed guests from across Japan for the festival that featured games, local vendors, static displays of U.S. Marine Corps and Japan Self-Defense Force aircraft, and live music performances. Among the highlights was a special appearance by the band Babymetal. This festival was one of the biggest events held by MCCS with one of the largest turnouts.
“It's a great opportunity to open the base to bring the local community in, and to provide plenty of opportunities for everybody to integrate and to share, food, fun, games, music, entertainment, and get to know one another,” said Col. William Pacatte, commanding officer of Marine Corps Air Station Futenma. “There's going to be plenty of opportunities for guests that come aboard the installation to get up close and personal with aircraft, to talk to air crews, to talk to maintainers, and to get some very detailed and specific insights into what we do here on a daily basis.”
The festival was spread out across the entire flight line on MCAS Futenma, beginning with a car show staged near the entrance of the festival. Attendees were able to view 250 vehicles like the Ford Model T, to Japanese Domestic Market icons such as multiple versions of the Nissan GTR. These vehicles were brought in by local car enthusiasts from across island.
Following the car show, attendees had the opportunity to engage with static displays featuring both U.S. and Japanese military equipment. Military personnel from both nations were on hand to demonstrate the functionality of each aircraft and explain how they are utilized by their respective forces.
“We have over 20 aircraft static displays from both from the U.S. and Japanese forces,” said Pacatte. “We also have more than 10 ground vehicle static displays, from multiple U.S. services as well as the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force.”
The festival also had a variety of food lanes for attendees to enjoy. This area was comprised of food trucks from 30 local vendors across island, each serving different food options from pizza and burgers to boba tea and yakitori meals. Next to the vendors was “Fun Land” an amusement park area with trampolines, zip lines, spinning tea cups, pendulum rides, and a rock wall all designed for children to enjoy.
Wrapping up the festival’s entertainment, the performance stage showcased a diverse lineup of bands from around the globe. On the final day, the renowned musical group Babymetal took the stage, delivering a show featuring an array of smoke machines, vibrant lights, projectors, and screens. Accompanied by a live backing band, they performed their most popular songs.
MCCS currently plans to continue to bring even more vendor activities and guests every year to the MCAS Futenma Flight Line Fair.
