OKINAWA, Japan - U.S. service members, Okinawan officials, master labor contractors, and families of the awardees gathered at the Okinawa Civic Hall to recognize over 700 MLCs for more than a decade of service on Oct. 10, 2024. These awards were presented by Shinya Ito, director general of the Okinawa Defense Bureau, and the respective commanding officers for each U.S. installation on island.

Leaders from every installation on island were in attendance as well, to show their support and appreciation for the work MLCs do.

“The MLC employees in this event are so important because they work and man the mess halls across the region,” said Chief Warrant Officer Daniel Jensen, operations officer of base food service, Marine Corps Installations Pacific. “These employees allow Marines and operational forces to go forward in the field while installation mess halls feed Marines and Sailors in the rear.”

The ceremony began with opening statements from Okinawan officials congratulating the MLCs on their years of service and how vital they all are to both the Okinawan government and the U.S. installations on island.

The ceremony highlighted individuals who have hit major milestones, by having the longest serving MLC on stage be presented a certificate and medal on behalf of all the MLC’s present. The longest serving MLCs ranged from 10 to 40 years.

There are over 9,000 MLCs across the island who play an integral part in the operations of each installation. In the Marine Corps alone there were over 200 employees who have worked more than 10 years.

The ceremony concluded with a reception where food and drinks were provided and where guest gathered to take photos in front of a U.S. and Japanese flags. This is an annual event set to be held again next year to celebrate and show appreciation to more MLCs and the work they do.
