COB ADDER, Iraq — For a non-commissioned officer, development and growth is one of the main challenges one will face when it comes to promotion.
The non-commissioned officer professional development program was created to help junior and senior enlisted members on the road toward promotion by holding a quarterly training class to help NCOs improve their leadership abilities.
The subjects can range from changes to promotion schemes to lessons learned from leaders in the field.
United States Division — South Command Sgt. Maj. Jim Champagne was present for the second-quarter NCOPD, which helped senior NCOs with the updated promotion options to the rank of sergeant major. Command Sgt. Maj. Champagne went over the role of diversity and experience in the new system as well as a lessened emphasis on awards over experience.
"You can have all the oak leaves you want," said Champagne. "But when it comes to being promoted to sergeant major, it doesn't mean anything."
The change in selection from a unit-based, decentralized method to a Department of the Army, centralized selection process can be a good change forward, according to Master Sgt. Joseph Organ, the retention NCO for the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade.
"Overall, it'll help us in certain career fields," he said. "It will also create a fresh pool of ideas and thoughts, because some of your older CSMs will sit around in their brigade for years. Now they'll be able to turn over into another job instead of becoming complacent in their position."
After the NCOPD Meeting, Organ said that it was an honor to talk with about his promotion opportunities.
"It's always a great opportunity to get the see the division sergeant major and to be able to interact with him," said Organ.
