FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. - U.S. Soldiers with Delta Company, 128th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 28th Infantry Division conducted drivers training with Night Vision Goggles in order to be qualified to drive at night using NVGs and blackout lights on their military vehicles.

The training occurred at Fort Indiantown Gap during Delta's Company's October drill weekend. The four-day long training weekend also included an Army Combat Fitness test and flu shots.

During the drivers training, Soldiers with Delta Company trained in the HMMVM using blackout lights while wearing Night Vision Goggles. The goggles were mounted onto their Advanced Combat Helmet to free their hands to drive the course at night. The HMMVM had the regular headlights turned off, because of the brightness they project.

NVGs are typically used in the military to allow Soldiers to see in the dark. They are only used during low light or when it is completely black outside.
This allows service members to still be able to operate while giving access to light, surveillance, and be aware of their surroundings in the field during nighttime.

The drivers course consisted of glow sticks, that would appear brighter when using the goggles. They were laid out along the trail and around the course. The Soldiers were instructed to follow the glow sticks along the road. They had to navigate through tight spaces of buildings, twists and turns, and avoid massive puddles. It is a training course that can only be completed in darkness using NVGs.

The reason behind using Night Vision Goggles is for the enemy to not see where the vehicles are coming from. It helps to transport troops back and forth safely and securely. It is also for the soldiers, so they can navigate in the dark, without having to use their red light which tends to be seen easier during sundown.

Once troops felt comfortable with driving around the course, then they would be qualified through their personal military license to drive with NVGs in either a HMMWV or LMTV.
