FORT STEWART, Ga.-- The 3rd Infantry Division Band took part in a week-long residency in Disneyland Resort to train alongside department heads from Disney Live Entertainment in hopes to incorporate what they've learned into their own performances and practices.
“What we're trying to get out of it is ways that we can apply what they do here at Disneyland to what we do in the Army band,”said U.S. Army Warrant Officer Tim Rogers, the Commander of the 3rd Infantry Division Band. “Specifically looking at show design, production, and messaging. Disney is the world class leader in storytelling, and messaging, and wrapping that all up into a live entertainment product. So we’re here to learn from the best.”
The 3ID Band spent this week-long intensive with Disney Live Entertainment experiencing what a regular work schedule would consist of from the perspective of a participant of the Training with Industry program.
The 3ID Band began their week with three self- produced performances throughout the park, and spent the rest of their schedule training alongside directors from DLE, members of the DLE casting department, producers and production managers, and the Disneyland Band in hopes to identify ways to apply what they do at Disneyland to what the 3ID Band does in their own performances.
“I think it’s really important for a couple of reasons,” Rogers said. “First of all, we’re strengthening a partnership with Disneyland and their Live Entertainment, and secondly it just kind of shows the Army’s outreach capability. We’re here coming where the people are, and tieing into Disney trying to find new ways to promote the Army and the Army values.”
Disney Live Entertainment is one of the most sought after hosts of the Training With Industry program which provides an opportunity for graduates of the U.S. Army School of Music to complete a one-year assignment within the Live Entertainment division.
Service members accepted into the TWI program can expect to learn best practices from choreographers, show designers, producers, and technical directors from industry- leading entertainers.
This year-long assignment enables soldiers to gain valuable civilian work experience while continuing their active-duty service.
“Here at Disneyland you’ve got the absolute leaders of industry,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Joshua Bennett, a member of the 3rd Infantry Division Band. “This is the giant of the entertainment industry. So, as the Army modernizes, Army entertainment modernizes too. The 3rd Infantry Division Band, being part of that Army’s modernization, it’s important for us to get with those industry leaders and figure out how to modernize our own entertainment.”
The training began on Oct. 19th and concluded on Oct. 25th.
