HICKORY, N.C. - The destruction following Tropical Storm Helene had left residents without power, heat, and in many cases, a home.
With winter fast approaching and temperatures plummeting, an additional plan was created to bring warmth to those who lived in the higher elevations.
The N.C. National Guard, U.S. Army, and North Carolina Emergency Management made it a priority to give unused clothing to people who needed it most.
Located in California were 15,000 pieces of Army cold weather clothing that were no longer being utilized due to its outdated digital pattern.
The cold weather clothing was quickly shipped across the U.S. and personally delivered into the hands of Western North Carolinians and first responders.
“This is going to keep them warm,” said N.C. National Guardsman Spc. Ben Lassiter, who is assigned to the 130th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade.
Guardsmen inventoried the various clothing options and sizes to meet the needs of each citizen. The cold weather clothing included fleeces, cold and wet weather jackets and trousers.
In support of Joint Task Force-North Carolina, The National Guard has continued to work alongside various organizations to prioritize relief efforts for Western N.C. residents.
“It’s great seeing several different organizations coming together and working to achieve the same goal,” Lassiter said.
