Several Headquarters and Support (H&S) Battalion barracks received new mattresses, blinds and linens as part of an initiative to enhance the quality of life among Marines who live in Bachelor Enlisted Quarters, also known as barracks, on Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

“Nearly $675k in funding was secured by H&S Battalion to support quality-of-life improvements,” said 1st Lt. Garret Potter, a supply officer with H&S Battalion, Marine Corps Installations East (MCIEAST)-MCB Camp Lejeune.

Improvements for Marines included 610 new mattresses and linen sets and 322 sets of blinds across five barracks on MCB Camp Lejeune and Stone Bay. Another 200 mattresses and 22 chairs are pending delivery and installation.

The effort to improve sleeping conditions was the result of inspections by the battalion safety manager and staff noncommissioned officers of the battalion, who identified the need.

“Our battalion safety manager, along with the first sergeants identified [the needed replacements] during barracks inspections and we immediately set out to not only provide newer soft goods, but to upgrade them in the process,” said Sgt. Maj. Marshall Gregg, battalion sergeant major, H&S Battalion, MCIEAST-MCB Camp Lejeune.

Marines assigned to Alpha Company, H&S Battalion, can also expect an additional delivery of made-to-order furniture before the end of the year, according to Potter.

In line with the Commandant of the Marine Corps’ plan to improve quality of life through meaningful investments in barracks, the H&S Battalion staff is registering needs and standardizing the furniture acquisition process, so they are prepared to make purchases when funding is made available.

Gregg added, “Improving the Marines’ quality of life remains a top priority for our Commandant, our MCIEAST Commander, and the H&S Battalion Commanding Officer.”
