GREAT LAKES, Ill. (November 7, 2024) – Naval Station Great Lakes’ (NSGL) Safety Department was awarded the fiscal year 2023 Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Shore Safety Awards For Significant Contributions to Navy Safety And Occupational Health for large, non-industrial activity, November 7, 2024.

The annual CNO Shore Safety Awards recognize commands with the best overall safety programs that emphasize risk management and mishap prevention, and are considered the top safety award within the Navy. This is NSGL’s second consecutive award, and has been nominated for the fiscal year 2024 as well.

In a message to the fleet, Rear Adm. Christopher Engdahl, commander, Navy Safety Command, noted the winning organizations excelled in implementing the safety management system, achieving high-velocity learning, reducing mishaps and costs and promoting a strong safety culture.

“Safety is one of the core tenets of our command, and having our hard work recognized by the CNO is an honor,” said Ross Johnson, NSGL safety and explosive safety officer. “By fostering a culture where safety is a top priority, we ensure that each person – from our safety professionals to our deck plate civilian and Sailors makes it home every night. It has been a long journey, but our collective commitment to safety excellence is what sets NSGL apart from other commands, and I am proud of this achievement.”

NSGL leadership embraced safety as a top priority, stressing empowerment amongst supervisors and ensuring safety concerns were addressed at the appropriate level. Additionally, the command created a multilingual training curriculum, enabling employees to receive safety-related training in their native language.

NSGL’s safety program’s effectiveness is honed in on training compliance, near mishap trends and ergonomic complaints. In the crucial area of explosive safety, NSGL has been 100% compliant for the previous two fiscal years. Near-miss reports have decreased from three in fiscal year 2022 to one in fiscal year 2023. A reduction in near-miss incidents demonstrates its staff is taking steps to reduce the situations that can cause injury. Lessons learned are discussed at least quarterly in the base safety council meetings. The command plan of the week also communicates safety tips and lessons.

Wet and freezing conditions are expected at NSGL, and it was identified in a safety council meeting that some staff were slipping on icy surfaces. As a result, ice hazard signs were placed near walking surfaces to alert them to freezing conditions.

“The Great Lakes safety team, and the installation as a whole, has excelled at safety and at creating a safe environment for the 40,000 new Sailors here on the base,” said NSGL Commanding Officer, Capt. Stephen M. Yargosz. “They have achieved this through aggressive and holistic safety initiatives, evidenced by their multiple awards. I’m proud of what they have been able to achieve, and I look forward to their continued success.”
