NEWPORT, R.I. – The Navy Supply Corps School (NSCS) hosted the Chief of Supply Corps, Rear Adm. Kenneth Epps, Nov. 6, 2024, as he visited the schoolhouse to lead a professional development session for Basic Qualification Course (BQC) 1st Battalion students and to attend Orders Reading for BQC’s 4th Battalion students.

The professional development session with Rear Adm. Epps was a master class in leadership, commitment, and lifelong passion for one’s work. Each student in 1st Battalion had the opportunity to introduce themselves individually, engaging and connecting directly with Epps, who shared his deep insights on what it means to be a Navy leader.

Epps spoke to the importance of leadership, financial prudence, and finding personal passion in one’s work.

“If you can find the passion in what you’re doing, it will fuel you for the rest of your life,” he stated, underscoring the critical role that genuine enthusiasm and commitment play in building a lasting career. He challenged students to take ownership of their roles as leaders, saying, “be a leader, stand up in front of a group of human beings, convince them that you are worth following, and lead by example.”

Throughout the session, Epps’s words resonated with the students, igniting a renewed sense of purpose and determination. His insights offered practical, actionable guidance and inspired the future Supply Corps Officers to approach their roles with integrity and enthusiasm.

Following the professional development session, the NSCS held an event that marked a critical milestone in the BQC student’s journey, the Orders Reading for the 4th Battalion. This long-awaited event is a major step in the career path of every Supply Corps Officer, signifying the official assignment to their first duty stations. The atmosphere was charged with excitement and anticipation as students finally learned where they would begin their service in the Navy.

Amid cheers, high-fives, and smiles, students received their orders, acknowledging the significance of the occasion. The event was made even more special by the presence of Epps and the NSCS Commanding Officer Capt. T. Richie Jenkins, who extended their congratulations and support to each student, recognizing the hard work and dedication that had brought them to this point.

“The Orders Reading ceremony is a moment these students will remember for the rest of their careers,” said Jenkins. “It marks the transition from training to the Fleet and the beginning of their responsibilities as Navy leaders.”

As they step into their new assignments, these future leaders carry with them the insights shared by Epps, whose guidance provides a solid foundation as they take on the responsibilities of leading within the Navy’s Supply Corps.

As NSCS continues to shape the future of the Navy’s supply community, events like these – blending hands-on mentorship with important career milestones – are invaluable. The professional development session and Orders Reading underscore NSCS’s commitment to nurturing officers who are not only technically skilled but also dedicated to their roles as leaders across the fleet.

The NSCS, located at Naval Station Newport, R.I., offers a range of career-long training for the Supply Corps community. Their mission is to develop professional Supply Officers and logisticians who are ready to lead, fight and win in the maritime domain.
