For most people, slow-pitch softball is just a game. For those that share a love for it, it’s about community.
I am Tech. Sgt. Steven Durbin, 97th Civil Engineer Squadron Requirements & Optimization section chief at Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma. Softball is a linchpin that directly promotes lasting relationships between service men and women with the local community.
I have played the game of softball around the world with numerous teams and on many different levels. Every tournament I have ever attended, the outcome was always the same: I was able to make memories with new friends. Whether it was playing in Europe, Abu Dhabi, or the United States, the intent was always having fun while promoting esprit de corps with complete strangers who share the same passion.
I have directed 3 base-wide softball tournaments, played in five different countries, and volunteered countless hours to enhance relationships with joint forces, raise money for non-profit organizations, and establish a relationship with local communities. Softball is also used as a recruiting tool to showcase how we stay fit to fight, build friendships, and show that we play as hard as we work.
The game of softball advertises diversity and inclusion to enhance teamwork. Regardless of playing in coed tournaments, intramural, varsity, or senior levels, or simply fundraisers with families, the softball community continues to grow. The game provides a strong support system to strengthen individual resiliency with a Comprehensive Airman Fitness backbone.
Softball is more than just a game, it’s a way of life.
