The Milwaukee Veterans Day Parade is an opportunity for civilians and service members alike to come out and show their support for those who have served. Marching and celebrating allows the community to come together and recognize the value of freedom that is only achieved because of the sacrifice of those who willingly volunteered to fight for it.
Daniel Wesolowski, a member of the Midwest Military Vehicle Association, is one of those veterans. Wesolowski’s group collects and preserves historic military vehicles from all eras of the U.S. military and works to provide opportunities to the public to learn about military transport equipment.
“We bring them out every Veterans Day for our parade to honor and remember all that have served in the U.S. Military,” said Wesolowski. “It shows that people still remember the sacrifices.”
Wesolowski’s family, like many others, have a strong military background. Wesolowski wore a jacket and drove a tribute vehicle dedicated to his uncle who served in World War II. Spending time in the Marine Corps, Wesolowski is proud to have served his country and encourages others to celebrate and honor veterans’ service by participating in events like this.
Some of the biggest supporters of veterans are their own family members. Diana Rettig, president of Blue Star Mothers Southeast Wisconsin, is doing her part to help support veterans.
“Our sons and daughters have served or are serving, and they are going to be veterans some day,” said Rettig. “We need to be supporting them and showing them our gratitude.”
Rettig’s group illustrates the ongoing support for veterans even after they finish their military career. Assisting with providing meals and homes for veterans, as well as working at events like the Milwaukee Veterans Parade, demonstrates the gratitude that these supporters have for those who have served. The group dates all the way back to World War I when mothers would send care packages to their children during the war.
Another way that people choose to support our nation's veterans is by attending the parade as a spectator. Tiffany Santiago spent her day cheering on the various groups involved in the parade, showing her support and recognition for those who have served.
“The community should come together and support our veterans,” said Santiago. “I get emotional thinking about it. It gives me a warm feeling.”
People like Santiago are believers that support for their veterans can be something as easy as just showing up to events like this that commemorate their service: “Come and show your support and remember we are still one, we are still the United States of America.”

Attending and participating in the parade is a way that the citizens of Milwaukee show the support they have for our nation's service members. Events like this are powerful statements that illustrate the level of unity that the American people have for our veterans. The Milwaukee Veterans Day Parade is our annual reminder that our service members are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice.
