LODZ, Poland - U.S. Army Soldiers from Alpha Company, 142nd Division Sustainment Support Battalion (DSSB), marked Polish Independence Day by participating in the 13th Lodz Polish Independence Picnic, Nov. 11, 2024.
The Soldiers, stationed in Poland as part of the Rotationally Aligned Forces, work closely with NATO allies and regional security partners to ensure a competent, ready presence in Europe under V Corps, America’s forward-deployed corps. They joined the larger celebration to provide insight into the U.S. Army’s presence in Europe and to strengthen ties with the local community while commemorating Poland’s 106 years of independence.
“Participating in the Poland Independence Picnic was an experience my Soldiers and I will forever cherish,” said Capt. Michael Malave, Alpha Company, 142nd DSSB commander. “It gave us the chance to connect with the local community, embrace Poland’s rich history, and deepen our bonds with NATO allies.”
Attendees, estimated to be around 60,000, had the opportunity to meet the Soldiers, take photos, and explore military equipment. The display included two Joint Light Tactical Vehicles that guests could climb into, along with other standard-issue army gear, such as combat helmets and body armor, which participants were invited to try on.
“It’s really humbling to be here being asked about the Army and to take photos with all the locals,” said Spc. Cameron Waddell, a petroleum supply specialist assigned to Alpha Company, 142nd DSSB. “We’re here to support them, it’s nice to know we have their support as well.”
Col. James T. Fisher, the 1st Cavalry Division Sustainment Brigade commander, spoke at the event, emphasizing the strong ties between Poland and the United States and underscoring the value of cooperation and unity among allied forces. He also noted the unique tie this holiday has for both countries, as Nov. 11 is celebrated as Veterans Day in the United States each year.
“The history of our two countries goes back to the founding of the United States,” said Fisher. “The fact that we share this holiday is an honor.”
The 1st Cavalry Division and Task Force Pegasus recognize the importance of connecting with local communities throughout Europe. Through community engagements, they continue to strengthen the bonds between local communities, assuring NATO allies of the partnership and cooperation.
