KADENA AIR BASE, Japan - The 18th Communication Squadron conducted a no-notice communication outage exercise for the 18th Wing as directed by Brig. Gen. Nicholas Evans, Nov. 14, 2024.
The exercise tested many of the units on Kadena to verify if their primary, alternate, contingency, and emergency (PACE) plan works appropriately, ensuring mission readiness in the event of an emergency.
“If the base loses power or something happens where communications aren't available, everyone needs to have a plan for how they are going to communicate – , especially if there are real world missions going on,” said U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. Natalie Agosto-Sungino,18th Communications Squadron officer in charge of cyber operations.“This is just to make sure that those processes are in place and they're working.”
Units throughout the base operated as normal, supporting their own communications, conducting mission requirements and following their PACE plan. As a part of the exercise, the 18th Wing maintained mission readiness, utilizing multiple methods, enabling members to continue operations and generate sorties.
“All flightline operations that were scheduled were able to take off. We had multiple missions and take-offs of fighters and heavy aircraft that were able to continue their operations, both prior to – and during – the exercise,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Austin Conners, 18th Operations Group director of staff. “No mission holds, everything went as planned today.”
Throughout the exercise, squadrons adapted to changing conditions of communication, challenging them to continue mission operations and ensuring every aspect of their PACE plans worked seamlessly.
