Athletes, families and volunteers convened at Yokota High School to take part in the 45th Kanto Plains Special Olympics at Yokota Air Base, Japan, Nov. 9.
The KPSO is an annual event that celebrates inclusion, athletic achievement and community collaboration. It provides an opportunity for Team Yokota to strengthen connections with athletes and their families from across the region through sports.
“This celebration is a testament to the enduring relationship that we have nurtured with the Kanto Plains community over the years,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Brett Cochran, 374th Airlift Wing deputy commander. “Today, we witness the passion and skill of the athletes who have come here to showcase their abilities and love for sports. Accompanying them are volunteers from various corners of the Kanto Plains, united in their commitment to support these games.”
Approximately 101 athletes competed in multiple competitions such as disc throwing, standing long jumps, relay races and soccer shooting.
“Events like these bring the community and service members together,” said Senior Airman Moanatafa Pouesi, KPSO athlete-buddy volunteer coordinator. “It’s heartwarming seeing the athletes and volunteers being able to bond during a fun day like this.”
