U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) and the German Ministry of Defense co-hosted the 2024 iteration of the Northern Europe Chiefs of Defense Conference in Berlin, Germany, from Nov. 19-20, 2024, bringing together senior military leaders from across Europe and the U.S. to discuss regional security, military modernization and collective deterrence and defense.

The event drew dozens of senior military leaders from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, the U.K. and the U.S., including U.S. National Guard adjutant generals and senior enlisted leaders from Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The annual conference also included first-time participants from Belgium, Canada and Luxembourg in a bid to further develop strategic, regional partnerships to ensure the safety and security of Europe and beyond.

“We have a shared responsibility to address the chronic threat posed by Russia and terror groups,” said U.S. Army Gen. Christopher Cavoli, USEUCOM commander and Supreme Allied Commander Europe. “We understand the weight of our responsibility and the value of our strategic partnerships. This meeting highlights our commitment to presenting a unified effort toward deterrence and defense in the Euro-Atlantic.”

The conference included panel discussions and breakout sessions on a range of topics including regional threats, hybrid threats, maritime security and defense modernization. Participants also had the opportunity to engage in bilateral and multilateral discussions, building relationships and strengthening partnerships that support a safe, stable and secure Euro-Atlantic region by increasing military capabilities, readiness and integration.

“Russia's attack on Ukraine and unabated Russian aggression remain the greatest threat to Europe's freedom. For our Alliance, that means deterrence,” said Gen. Carsten Breuer, Germany’s chief of defense. "Strong armed forces and a resilient society - this is the language that Putin understands. Our NATO is stronger than ever, also thanks to the recent accession of Finland and Sweden. Together we stand against the Russian threat in all domains: land, air, sea and cyber."

Regularly hosted by Allies throughout Europe, Chiefs of Defense conferences are a key component of EUCOM’s comprehensive approach to regional security. Through continuous engagement, EUCOM and its Allies foster enduring partnerships and strengthening cooperation among Allied nations.
