FORT STEWART, Ga. – The 3rd Infantry DIvision recently hosted its Marne Week 2024 Best Chef competition where culinary specialists from across the division competed against each other at Fort Stewart, Georgia, Nov. 19, 2024. The Best Chef competition consisted of four three-man teams who cooked a three-course meal – an appetizer, entree and a dessert plate – and were judged for taste, texture and culinary excellence by a panel of judges.
“You can’t run the Army on an empty stomach,” said Sgt. Jeremiah Ruiz, a culinary specialist team leader from the winning team. “I was very happy about winning. My team put in a lot of work and that's what made our whole team win. There is no I in team.”
The competition brings together culinary specialists from across 3rd ID to compete and showcase their skills in preparing high-quality meals under pressure, emphasizing their vital role in feeding Soldiers and highlights their critical role in supporting Soldier readiness.
“I love that I can be creative with my cooking,” said Ruiz. “[I get to] use the skills that I have and pass them down to my Soldiers [and] in the same way, I can learn from them, they can learn [from me] and grow their own set of skills.”
Culinary specialists play a crucial role in the Army ensuring Soldiers are provided with nutritious, well-prepared meals, boosting morale and supporting overall mission readiness. Culinary specialists help serve meals to Soldiers on the field, and operate dining facilities which offer a variety of meal options for Soldiers.
“For the competition, we get briefed on what we are cooking, and we get a time to where we have to prepare, and then decide what we do as a team”, said Spc. Martin Gutierrez, a culinary specialist from the winning team.
3rd ID celebrated Marne Week through team-building competitions such as the Best Chef Competition where Soldiers demonstrated their culinary skills, fostering camaraderie and teamwork while competing for the title of top chef. Marne Week is an annual week-long event hosted by the division to highlight the division’s anniversary and storied legacy.
