On November 13, 2024, the Quartermaster Corps community gathered at the Quartermaster Museum to pay tribute to a legendary leader and dedicated servant of the Corps, the late Col. (Ret) Robert C. Barrett. The event marked a special occasion—the dedication of the education wing of the museum in Barrett's name.
The dedication, hosted by Col. Erin C. Miller, the 59th Quartermaster Commandant, had Barrett’s family, friends, and many distinguished members across the Quartermaster Corps in attendance.
His legacy is a testament to his unwavering commitment to the Quartermaster Corps and the United States Army. A graduate of Western Michigan University, Barrett was commissioned as a second lieutenant through the ROTC program in 1958.
He went on to serve in a diverse range of units and leadership positions, including Infantry platoon leader, Quartermaster company commander, S-4 for 5th and 6th Special Forces Group, supply/logistics officer G4, and multiple deployments, including two tours in Vietnam. Following his active Army career, Col. (Ret) Barrett demonstrated exceptional leadership and expertise through his tenure as the President of the Quartermaster Foundation. Under his leadership, the foundation raised over $1.4 million for the Quartermaster Museum.
During his career, Barrett earned numerous decorations and awards, including the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Combat Infantry Badge, Master Parachute Wings, Special Forces Tab, and the Distinguished Order of Saint Martin. He was inducted into the Quartermaster Hall of Fame in 2003.
Barrett's family in attendance included his wife Mrs. Shirley Barrett, his
children Mr. Robert C. Barrett III, Mrs. Randi Barett-Lanzafama, Mrs. Terri Barrett-Vaden, his grandchildren Mr. Robert Barrett IV, Mr. Kyle Evans, Mrs. Leigh Barrett-Smith, and his great-granddaughter Virginia Mae Smith.
On behalf of his family, Mrs. Randi Barett-Lanzafama provided a heartfelt reflection on the career and legacy of her father.
Upon reflection of the event Mrs. Terri Barrett-Vaden said, “This memorialization was an extraordinary moment for my family.”
Maj. Gen.l (Ret) Richard E. Beale Jr., a renowned leader in the Quartermaster Corps with over 35 years of federal service, also delivered a heartfelt tribute to Col. (Ret) Barrett.
Maj. Gen. (Ret) Beale highlighted his numerous fond memories with Barrett and highlighted his remarkable contributions.
The dedication of the education wing of the Quartermaster Museum in Col. (Ret) Robert C. Barrett's name serves as a lasting tribute to his legacy and contributions to the Quartermaster Corps. It is a reminder of the enduring impact that dedicated leaders like Col. (Ret) Barrett and Maj. Gen. (Ret) Beale have had on the Corps and the Army.
As the Quartermaster Corps community continues to develop within the everchanging 20th century, it is essential to remember and honor the legacy of leaders like Barrett, who have paved the way for future generations of soldiers. His example of selfless service, exceptional leadership, and unwavering commitment to the Corps will never be forgotten.
