Soldiers from the 84th Training Command paid tribute to President Zachary Taylor at a wreath-laying ceremony at the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville Nov. 25 at 11 a.m.
Each year, a U.S. military general or flag officer lays a wreath - provided by the White House - at the gravesite of each deceased former U.S. president on the anniversary of their respective births.
Brig. Gen. Sonya Powell, commanding general of the 87th Training Division, hosted this year’s ceremony, and an honor cordon from the 84th Training Command assisted with the wreath laying.
“I am very honored to be here and celebrate the 240th birthday of Zachary Taylor,” said Powell. “Not only was he our 12th president, he was also a career Army officer that had an historic career.”
Taylor, the nation's 12th president, grew up in Louisville before joining the Army in 1808. He was sworn into office in 1849 and served as president for 16 months before his death in 1850.
