Wando High School Marine Wrestling Challenge

    CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA, UNITED STATES

    11.27.2024

    Story by Sgt. Alexander Ransom

    6th Marine Corps District

COLUMBIA, S.C. – U.S. Marines from Recruiting Substation North Charleston, Recruiting Station Columbia, 6th Marine Corps District will assist the Wando High School (WHS) wrestling team in organizing a state-wide individual wrestling tournament at the WHS gymnasium, Wando, South Carolina, 8:00 a.m., December 7, 2024.

This tournament, titled the “2024 Marine Challenge,” will host girls’, junior varsity, and middle school wrestling teams from across the state to promote and build momentum for girls’ wrestling and beginning wrestlers.

“Wrestling is a sport that increases many physical attributes necessary in other sports and life,” Coach Adam Schneider, head wrestling coach for Wando High School. “The opportunity to showcase these women is one of the driving forces behind running the tournament.”

A rapidly growing high school sport across the United States and South Carolina, the South Carolina High School League hosted its first annual girls’ wrestling state individual tournament in 2023.

“I am very excited that the Marine Corps is a part of the tournament,” said Adam. “Wrestling is often called the Marine Corps of athletics, so it fits. Wrestling is a combat sport, and many traits wrestlers display can be found in those serving in the Marine Corps.”

The Marine Corps has an illustrious history of competing at the national and international level in Greco-Roman wrestling. One example is Marine Staff Sergeant John Stefanowicz, an 87 kg weight class competitor representing the United States at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Stefanowicz also competed in the Senior Pan-American Championships for 2020 and 2021 and the Matteo Pellicone Rank Series for 2020 and 2021.
“There are not many tournament opportunities across the state for middle school, JV, and Girls to work on their craft,” Adam said. “By running this tournament we allow these athletes to get the mat time they need to improve.”
This tournament is open to the public at the WHS Gymnasium, Wando, South Carolina, at 8:00 a.m. Weigh-ins for junior varsity and middle school wrestlers start at 7:30 a.m. Weigh-ins for girls’ wrestling starts at 8:30 a.m. For more information, contact the U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting Station Marketing and Communication office at alexander.ransom@marines.usmc.mil.
