SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. — U.S. Transportation Command’s Command, Control, Communications and Cyber Systems directorate, Audit and Analysis branch, was recognized Dec. 3, as a 2024 Department of Defense Chief Information Officer Team Award winner during a ceremony at the Pentagon.

Award recipients included Air Force Maj. Elizabeth Willenbring, Ed Jenkins, Charles Long, Ricky Vaught, Mika Detmer, and Martin Williamson.

The team was highlighted for improving USTRANSCOM’s compliance monitoring, reporting, and automated processes, enhancing the combatant command’s operational efficiency.

“It is an honor to see our efforts recognized at the highest level,” said Willenbring, Audit and Analysis branch chief, USTRANSCOM. “It exemplifies all the hard work being done by the team members in our branch. Professionally, it highlights the importance of teamwork, innovation, and the significant role IT plays in supporting USTRANSCOM’s mission and the broader DoD community.”

Their work included the rollout of a compliance monitoring and reporting tool, which streamlined cybersecurity compliance information for 58 programs of record. They also created a “7-minute drill” application to enhance operational efficiencies.

The team also improved the IT investment review process, which led to a nearly 100% success rate in processing requests within a 10-day target and reduced the approval time for IT investments.

Willenbring said that the 7-minute drill application automated a once-time-intensive process.

“The app replaced outdated manual processes, enabling more efficient information sharing and tracking for leadership meetings in a dashboard format. It streamlined the preparation and coordination of feeder information, reducing administrative overhead and allowing the team to focus on mission-critical tasks.”

The department's acting chief information officer, Leslie A. Beavers, along with Army Lt. Gen. Paul T. Stanton, who serves as the director of the Defense Information Systems Agency as well as the commander of the Joint Force Headquarters-DOD Information Network, presided over the award ceremony.

"The world is uncertain," Stanton said. "What is certain is that operations today and into the future require data. You can't war fight, you can't fight and win, if you don't have data. Our responsibilities within the DOD CIO are all about getting data to the right place at the right time to make a better and faster decision than our enemies."

USTRANSCOM’s selection for this award highlights the command’s leadership in IT innovation and exemplifies the collaboration and solutions necessary to achieve mission success in today’s IT environment.
