FORT SILL, Okla. — JROTC students from Lawton, Eisenhower, and MacArthur High Schools got a glimpse into military life during the "Day in the Life" event on Nov. 21, 2024, held at Fort Sill's Engagement Skills Trainer (EST). The event offered hands-on experiences with military technology, demonstrations and equipment displays, sparking curiosity and inspiration for potential careers in the armed forces.
Fires Center of Excellence Deputy to the Commanding General, Dr. Alvin Peterson, welcomed the students and emphasized the importance of their role in future advancements. “You are our future in science and technology,” he said. “So I’m glad you’re here to learn about what we do and how science and technology relates to that.”
Students rotated through several interactive stations, including a chance to test their marksmanship at the EST and learn about Fort Sill Fire and Emergency Services’ life-saving skills. The 71st Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Group showcased advanced robotics and protective equipment, while Fort Sill’s Military Police K-9 unit demonstrated canine take-down and detection techniques.
Field artillery and air defense representatives also presented cutting-edge equipment and explained their role in modern military operations. For many students, seeing the technology and teamwork in action offered a new perspective on what the Army does daily.
“It’s a really important event because it shows the kids a little bit about what we do every day,” said Terance Sims-Allen, a recruiter with the Oklahoma City Recruiting Battalion. “As a recruiter, I talk to the kids every day, and I try to explain to them what the Army does, what it offers, and how fun our job is, but them coming here and seeing it firsthand really helps them get an idea of what they’ll get into if they do decide to join the Army later on.”
For Eisenhower High School sophomore Isaiah Carter, the event reinforced his interest in serving. “I’ve always wanted to join the Army or the Air Force,” he shared. “I’m kind of exploring my options today with the army.”
Eisenhower High School senior Alyssia Gray, who has been considering joining the army, said the experience further inspired her. “I like how all three schools have come together and actually get along and share their experience and talk about different things,” she said. “We all just kind of coexist here and be able to share how we like this, and we learn different things from each other.”
The event not only offered students insight into the diverse roles within the Army but also inspired them to consider their future possibilities. As they left Fort Sill, many students carried a newfound appreciation for the skills, technology and teamwork that define life in the military.
