SAN DIEGO -- Cmdr. Christopher Caraway was relieved by Cmdr. Ryan Doyle as commanding officer of the Independence-variant littoral combat ship USS Omaha (LCS 12) Blue crew during a change of command ceremony held at the USS Midway Museum in San Diego, Dec. 5. Capt. Douglas Meagher, Commander, Littoral Combat Ship Squadron 1, was the presiding officer and guest speaker at the ceremony.
During Caraway’s time in command, he led the crew of Omaha Blue crew through a one-year maintenance period, conducted a six-month underway main reduction gear remediation, completed basic phase certifications, successfully completed underway mobility-engineering certifications, and passed LCS integrated phase certifications and force protection certifications.
“To the crew, I am extremely proud of you and all that you have accomplished. You have proven yourselves time and time again to be resilient, adaptable and capable of achieving success," said Caraway. "You are what makes Omaha exceptional, and it has been a privilege to serve alongside you all."
During the ceremony, Caraway was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his superior accomplishments. Caraway will be reporting to Commander, Naval Air Forces, Pacific Fleet for his next tour of duty.
"Ryan, I have no doubts that you will take this crew and Omaha to the greatest of heights. I genuinely appreciate your sage counsel and your friendship throughout our tenure together," said Caraway. "I have seen firsthand your ability to lead with compassion, professionalism and integrity and I am confident that Omaha will thrive under your command."
Caraway is a native of San Diego, California, Cmdr. Christopher Caraway enlisted in the Navy in 2000 as a nuclear electricians mate. In 2004, he was selected for the STA-21 commissioning program and attended the University of Arizona. In 2006, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and commission. Caraway earned a Master of Science degree in Systems Engineering Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School in 2013.
Omaha is homeported in San Diego as a part of Littoral Combat Ship Squadron 1. Littoral combat ships are fast, optimally-manned, mission-tailored surface combatants that operate in near-shore and open-ocean environments, winning against 21st-century threats. LCS integrate with joint, combined, manned and unmanned teams to support forward-presence, maritime security, sea control, and deterrence missions around the globe.
