    1st Cavalry Division

MIHAIL KOGALNICEANU AIR BASE, Romania - 1st Cavalry Division leaders with the Division Tactical Command Post (DTAC) at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base in Romania, conducted Battle Staff Training for the Slovakian Joint Operations Command (SLV JOCOM) Dec. 2 - 6, 2024.

The training was held after the First Team’s Slovakian and Hungary Liaison officers observed the 1st Cavalry Division’s Rear Command Post (RCP) during Exercise Avenger Triad and saw how much the division developed as a staff over the exercise. The Slovakian JOCOM requested that the First Team teach some classes to highlight their major takeaways from Exercise Avenger Triad.

The JOCOM wanted the classes to focus on RCP operations and wet gap crossings. After receiving the request, the 1st Cavalry Division DTAC created a Battle Staff Training for Slovakians, Hungarians, and Romanians on the requested topics.
“The Slovakian JOCOM Staff is a newly formed Joint Headquarters that is currently being developed,” said Maj. Ryan Hopkins, the DTAC G2 Officer-in-Charge. “They requested some training with a focus on Rear Command Post Operations, synchronizing efforts across Warfighting Functions both with planning and executing operations, and some instruction on executing Wet Gap Crossings at the division level.”

Identifying instructors from different staff sections to teach the SLV JOCOM was the first priority to creating a successful training. The sections included G2, Finance, Medical, Sustainment, Intel, Protections, Engineering, and CUOPs.

Total participation in the training included twelve servicemembers from the Slovakian JOCOM Staff, five staff members from Romania 2nd Infantry Division, six members from Romania’s 4th Infantry Division, and three staff members from Hungary’s CJOC.

“BST was a great training event that brought 35 people from four different nations together to discuss RCP operations and wet gap crossings,” said Maj. William Allgood, 1st Cavalry Division G33 Operations Officer. “Every person who attended the classes learned new information and intended to integrate this new knowledge into future training.”

Serving as the opening lines of communications with partnered forces in southern portions of AO Pegasus, the training continued to build upon previous joint training collaborative efforts from the units before the 1st Cavalry Division arrived in Europe.
“The training allows us to pass on our lessons learned from division-level collective training events throughout our EUCOM rotation and to share that with the Army divisions that will rotate in behind the 1st Cavalry Division and assume this mission,” said Maj. Hopkins.

The training provided the SLV JOCOM with knowledge in various operations utilized by the 1st Cavalry Division which they will be able to use with their own units, strengthening our NATO allies and building cohesive teams.

“BST provided the 1st Cavalry Division with the opportunity to share the knowledge it gained from past exercises like Avenger Triad and Remagen Ready to better our NATO Allies. The BST also brought different NATO allies together to build relationships and share SOPs,” said Maj. Allgood. “Finally, the BST enhanced interoperability between NATO allies which is critical since NATO is stronger as a unified collective force.”
