SAN DIEGO – Capt. Douglas Meagher was relieved by Capt. Jose Roman as commander Littoral Combat Ship Squadron One (LCSRON One) during a change of command ceremony held at Naval Base San Diego, Dec. 11. Rear Adm. Randall Peck, Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group 3, was the presiding officer and guest speaker at the ceremony.
During Meagher’s time in command, he implemented strategic vision that enhanced command and control of littoral combat ships in the U.S. Pacific Fleet, led the merging of Littoral Combat Ship Squadrons 1 and 3 into a single unified command, fostered Navy and Marine Corps integration and experimentation through fleet exercises and facilitation to include the first joint air-to-ground missile firing from a littoral combat ship, AEROSUNDE unmanned aerial vehicle testing and employment of unmanned surface vessels.
“I am humbled to stand here today as the Commodore of LCSRON One, while we steam ahead on and stay the course. We will continue to support higher headquarters tasking through several lines of effort. I know this staff stands ready to define the ultimate future of an entire class of ship in a major warfare area, it is a true honor and pleasure to serve as your Commodore," said Roman. "Doug, I sincerely wish you and your children the very best as you prepare for your next chapter."
During the ceremony, Meagher was awarded the Legion of Merit for his superior accomplishments.
“I will sleep easy knowing the squadron remains in the most capable hands, that our crews are more warfare proficient than ever, and that our staff continues to spend itself in a worthy cause," said Meagher. "It has been the most exhausting yet rewarding professional honor to have served as Commodore, I wish each and every one of you fair winds and following seas."
Meagher is a native of Killingly, Conn., a 1998 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, and has served on a frigate, destroyer, cruiser, and multiple littoral combat ships.
Littoral combat ships are fast, optimally-manned, mission-tailored surface combatants that operate in near-shore and open-ocean environments, winning against 21st-century threats. LCS integrate with joint, combined, manned and unmanned teams to support forward-presence, maritime security, sea control, and deterrence missions around the globe.
