It’s Mission Monday! Meet Maj. James Tyhurst, chief of the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center Detachment 3 Civil Engineer Division at Hurlburt Field, Florida.
He leads a team of civil engineering professionals in support of Air Force Special Operations Command. The team focuses on prioritizing and advocating for AFSOC requirements, ensuring timely execution of weapon system beddowns, military construction and facilities sustainment, restoration and modernization programs.
“I was always interested in the military, and when I started applying for colleges I learned about commissioning opportunities through the Reserve Officers' Training Corps,” Tyhurst said. “Eventually, everything fell into place and, before I knew it, I was commissioned!”
We asked the Kingwood, Texas, native to tell us more about himself and his work.
What do you love about your job?
I love being an engineer. Problem solving is a lot of fun and made better when you’re surrounded by other problem solvers, all focused on organizational success.
When it comes to your job, what keeps you motivated?
Knowing I’m making a difference and getting the installations the resources they need to make the mission happen keeps me motivated. Also, the variety of daily tasks makes it difficult for work to become stagnant or routine, which is exciting.
Why are you and your team important to the Air Force enterprise and your customers?
Beyond the day-to-day tasks my team performs, we are always ready to respond to customer requests, helping navigate new challenges or interpreting strategic guidance. I strive to ensure the team has a strong relationship with their base-level counterparts, so they never feel like they don’t have an additional resource just a call away.
Why do you serve and what keeps you serving?
I enjoy the opportunity to tackle new challenges with every assignment as it drives me to grow professionally and keeps things interesting.
How does what you do support AFIMSC’s strategic priorities?
Much of what I’ve done lately has focused on the recapitalization of weapon systems with an emphasis on infrastructure and facilities. This directly supports increased lethality and readiness for AFSOC.
Is there anything else you’d like to add which might help people understand the importance of what you do for the Department of the Air Force?
Although Detachment 3 is small, we are a talented group of professionals committed to accomplishing the mission and empowering our customers to reach new heights.
