JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska — The 673d Civil Engineer group celebrated the opening of a K-Span structure with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Camp Madbull on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Dec. 13, 2024.

Camp Madbull is a regional training site consisting of 300 acres and a 3000-foot runway. This area provides a space for service members on JBER and outside forces to conduct tactical training and deployment-readiness exercises.

Airmen and civilians from the 673d CEG worked for approximately six months on this project. The new prefabricated metal building was constructed to protect equipment and allow operations to continue during Alaska’s harsh winter months, bolstering capabilities for rapid deployment capability.

“The CEG began working on this project in May of 2024,” said Senior Airman Valeriy Gritchin, 773rd Civil Engineer Squadron structural journeyman. “This process has been very successful because of the skills, experience and knowledge the people assigned to this project.”

U.S. Air Force Maj. Kevin Manalo, 773rd CES operations deputy, said that as geopolitical interest in the Arctic increases, the building strengthens the Air Force's presence in the region. By maintaining and extending the lifespan of airfield damage repair equipment, JBER’s civil engineer team improves their capability to sustain vital airfield operations, project power, and avert adversaries in the Arctic.

JBER continues to move forward with a commitment to ensure readiness in the context of the Great Power Competition.

“The combination of improved equipment longevity, enhanced operational readiness and strategic capability makes this project a vital asset in advancing in the U.S. Air Force's mission in an increasingly contested and challenging arctic environment,” Manalo said.
