A panel of 374th Airlift Wing members joined a women’s leadership engagement hosted by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force at Yokota Air Base, Japan, Dec. 12.

The JASDF Operations Support Wing and Central Air Defense Missile Group invited six 374th AW members to discuss U.S. female-centered programs and procedures, sharing insight with JASDF personnel to increase female participation in the military. While women make up 21% of the U.S. Air Force, JASDF sees 10% female representation.

“Interactions between U.S. and Japanese forces promote cross-cultural understanding, which is vital for successful cooperation,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Candice Trigg, 374th Airlift Wing organization culture chief advisor.

The event began with introductions from each panelist, followed by Q&A sessions with the attendees. Panelists shared insights from a range of professional experiences and career fields, addressing topics like policies, living arrangements at duty stations and in deployed locations and working in male-dominant career fields.

The discussion emphasized the importance of mentorship and communication.

“We want to ensure that our Airmen can be 100% effective, regardless of their job, gender, or demographic,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Jonathan Graham III, 374th Airlift Wing equal opportunity director. “We’ve made great strides and want to share those successes with our counterparts.”

The JASDF, Organizational Culture Coordinator office and Equal Opportunity teams have maintained an ongoing partnership to support professional development and process implementation for inclusion initiatives. Master Sgt. Trigg and JASDF Air Defense Command chief warrant officer Hiroki Kumasaka collaborated to plan the event aimed at addressing JASDF’s growing gender-diverse workforce.

“Personal and professional engagement between U.S. and Japanese forces reinforces the foundation of the U.S-Japan alliance, which is built on mutual trust, respect, and cooperation,” said Trigg. “By fostering strong relationships and a deep understanding of each other’s interests and values, the two nations can better navigate the complexities of the Indo-Pacific region.”
