NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. – U.S. Marines from Recruiting Substation Augusta, Recruiting Station Columbia, 6th Marine Corps District will assist the North Augusta High School (NAHS) wrestling team in hosting a multi-state individual wrestling tournament at the North Augusta Riverview Park Activity Center, North Augusta, South Carolina, beginning at 3:00 p.m., December 20, 2024.
This tournament, titled the “8th Rumble on the River wrestling tournament,” will host both boys and girls wrestling teams from across multiple states to expose their wrestlers and prove their hard-earned skill against each other.
“It gives teams from as far away as Virginia, Tennessee, and Florida the opportunity to go to an out-of-state tournament and wrestle kids their states don't normally have the opportunity to wrestle,” said Matthew Franklin, the head wrestling coach for North Augusta High School. “North Augusta is a centrally located destination for several areas in the Southeast with Interstate-20 offering a major access point for this side of the U.S.”
This tournament will, like the previous iteration in 2023, boast Marine Corps-style championship singlets as prizes for the winner of each weight class. This is to reflect the “natural fit” Coach Matt, a former active-duty U.S. Marine, describes the Corps as the primary military branch supporting the Rumble on the River Tournament.
“I love having the Marines at the tournament,” said Coach Matt. “Especially with being a Marine myself and knowing how much the Marine Corps supports wrestling around the globe. With no disrespect to the other branches, the Marine Corps epitomizes what wrestling is all about: integrity, hard work, discipline, teamwork, and putting others over self.”
Over the previous seven years of the tournament, Matt has seen its size grow proudly with each iteration as high school wrestling has grown in popularity as a sport. In 2023, the Rumble on the River tournament organized teams from 32 schools throughout South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia to wrestle in 14 weight classes.
“When I started this tournament eight years ago, I wanted to do something to draw attention to North Augusta’s wrestling program, and to heighten awareness of the sport,” said Coach Matt. “My hope for every year of the Rumble on the River tournament is for everyone to come out healthy, to show the area how awesome the sport of wrestling is, have excellent competition for both the boys and girls that are competing, and make new friends from all the different states that are represented annually.”
This tournament is open to the public at the North Augusta Riverview Park Activity Center, North Augusta, South Carolina. Tournament matches will begin at 3:00 p.m., Friday, December 20, and 9 a.m., Saturday, December 21.
