U.S. Marines with Combat Logistics Battalion 1, Combat Logistics Regiment 1, 1st Marine Logistics Group, participated in Steel Knight 24 at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California from Dec. 2-20.
Phase 1 of Steel Knight was the mission rehearsal exercise, where CLB-1 certified its ability to serve as the logistics combat element for the upcoming Marine Rotational Force - Darwin deployment to Australia.
The MRX phase of Steel Knight served as the first time the LCE, ground combat element and air combat element came together as one to prepare for MRF-D, an upcoming six-month deployment where Marines will train with Australian allies and facilitate rapid response to potential crises and contingencies.
“The great thing about Steel Knight for us is we got the opportunity to work with the Marines and Sailors that we are going to deploy with,” said Lt. Col. Tara Patton, the battalion commander of CLB-1. “Not just internal to the battalion, but also working with (1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division) as our future higher headquarters and getting to integrate with our Navy and Air Force counterparts.”
Using a simulated embassy, CLB-1 supported a military assisted departure, working with role players to practice processing U. S. citizens and transporting them out of a country in conflict.
“Our job was to provide the evacuation control center team to go through and screen and catalog and get flights out of country for those citizens,” said Patton.
Additionally, CLB-1 set up their combat operations center and integrated with 1st Medical Battalion, 1st MLG, allowing them to conduct mass casualty drills throughout the exercise.
The unit initially set up their COC and Role 2 medical capability. A Role 2 facility provides advanced trauma management and emergency medical treatment in a tactical environment with limited resources.
CLB-1 conducted several simulated casualty drills, culminating in a mass casualty exercise. The scenario involved treating multiple casualties at their Role 2 facility, airlifting stablized patients, and ended with further treatment at a facility aboard a U.S. Navy ship off the coast of Southern California.
CLB-1 also assisted in amphibious operations with the U.S. Navy to facilitate transporting Marines and Sailors with 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st MARDIV, and 1st Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st MARDIV.
The unit provided transportation support for 2nd Bn., 1st Marines, facilitating their amphibious landing to secure a beachhead. Their team established a beach operations group to receive landing craft bringing an artillery battery ashore from the ships. The battery included several M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, Joint Light Tactical Vehicles and 7-ton trucks. Once the battery was offloaded, CLB-1 ensured the artillery Marines had water and food, effectively sustaining at the firing position in support of I MEF.
Overall, the exercise gave Marines and Sailors with the battalion the opportunity to execute a variety of missions pivotal to a forward deployed MAGTF.
“I had really high expectations for the team coming into this exercise, and they have pretty consistently met and exceeded those expectations,” said Patton “It has been really fun seeing the young Marines and Sailors to step up and be in their element doing the really diverse set of missions that the battalion is tasked to perform.”
