ARNOLD AIR FORCE BASE, Tenn. – The Innovation Lab at Arnold Air Force Base is once again open for business.
The lab, being reintroduced following a recent renovation, gives Arnold team members a venue outside of the office to brainstorm concepts, work to improve processes, test ideas, collaborate and innovate.
Located in Building 536 at Arnold AFB, headquarters of Arnold Engineering Development Complex, the Innovation Lab is designed to serve as a hub for creative problem-solving, experimentation and idea generation. AEDC Innovation Manager Aaron Allen said the lab provides a unique space for military personnel, scientists, engineers and industry partners to converge and tackle complex challenges.
“The reopening of the Innovation Lab is a significant milestone for Arnold Air Force Base, as it reinforces our commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and excellence,” Allen said. “This unique facility will enable our teams to push the boundaries of what is possible, driving advancements in areas such as aerospace engineering and materials science.”
The recently completed renovation resulted in several ambiance upgrades, including an area for team members to sit and discuss ideas, a “living wall” adorned with plants in 3D-printed flowerpots and a fresh coat of paint. But those in the AEDC Continuous Improvement and Innovation, or CI2, group at Arnold feel the true appeal of the lab is the resources it places at the disposal of users.
Featuring what Allen described as an “array of cutting-edge tools and equipment,” the lab houses 3D printing and scanning capabilities, a computer lab with access to the Arnold Analysis Test Network, an environmental chamber, a shock tube and a small-scale wind tunnel.
Members of the CI2 team believe the flexible design of the lab allows for easy reconfiguration to accommodate a wide range of projects and activities, from small-scale prototyping to large-scale demonstrations.
“The Innovation Lab is more than just a physical space. It’s a catalyst for collaboration and creativity,” said AEDC Continuous Improvement Manager Pearson Brock.
The lab initially opened in 2022 for engineers and other Arnold personnel to experiment and explore new ideas that could be applied in the various mission areas at Arnold. The facility is set to continue its role as a place for groups to come up with advancements and solutions to further the missions of AEDC and the Air Force as a whole.
“We’re excited to bring together diverse stakeholders from across the base, academia and industry to co-create solutions that address real-world challenges and drive innovation in the Air Force and beyond,” said Dr. Justin Garrard, engineering solutions branch manager with the AEDC Test Operations and Sustainment contractor.
Allen said teams at Arnold have already begun utilizing the revamped Innovation Lab to address challenges and develop solutions.
“As the lab continues to evolve and grow, it is expected to play a vital role in shaping the future of Arnold Air Force Base and the broader Air Force community,” he said.
Department of Defense personnel at Arnold may contact Brock for access to the lab, and contractors on base may contact Garrard for access.
