ARNOLD AIR FORCE BASE, Tenn. – The Environmental Restoration Program team at Arnold Air Force Base is in the process of putting together a document that will help guide environmental cleanup efforts across the installation.
To coincide with this, the team wishes to make the public more aware of the program and get an idea of public concerns, questions members of the public may have and their participation in prior base remediation.
The Installation Restoration Program, also known as the Environmental Restoration Program, is the Air Force program established to identify, investigate and clean up hazardous waste disposal sites on government installations. The role of the Arnold AFB Environmental Restoration Program is to monitor and clean up groundwater, soil and surface water contamination throughout the base.
As stated in the 2022 document, the Community Involvement Plan, or CIP, is intended to provide a tool for Air Force personnel, cleanup contractors, and federal and state environmental regulators for continued community outreach and participation in environmental cleanup activities. It also serves to inform citizens near Arnold AFB of the status of environmental cleanup activities at the installation.
“Over the life of Arnold AFB, various military support activities occurred involved the use of solvents, petroleum, fuels, munitions and ordnance, as well as landfilling and other disposal practices that may have impacted soils and groundwater,” the 2022 CIP states.
The base CIP is released every three years and, to aid their completion of the 2025 document, the Arnold AFB Environmental Restoration Program team has released a survey to gauge knowledge of and interest in the program from Arnold personnel and members of the public.
“We just want to make sure people are aware that this exists and that, if they have concerns, they know how to reach us,” said Stephanie Short, Arnold AFB remedial project manager.
The survey can be found by scanning the QR Code found with this article or at: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=mHckNyz0_UKKN9SccSjTa7ialZB2vfVAmsEYecwHO8dUNk1TMlo1OVBJQTQ3MjFNWE1JWE9GOEY0Ni4u.
The 2022 CIP may be viewed at: https://ar.cce.af.mil. After clicking “Continue to Site,” select “Arnold AFB, TN” from the list on the left of the webpage and type “Community Involvement Plan” in the “Subject or Title” line. The search results and link to the document will appear at the bottom of the page.
Those wishing to participate in the survey are asked to do so prior to Feb. 1, 2025.
