The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has named Dr. Ivan Beckman director of the Engineer and Research Development Center’s (ERDC) Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL).
As director, Dr. Beckman will provide strategic guidance and policy direction for the laboratory’s operations, and spearheads its comprehensive research, development, technology, and program management initiatives. The Hanover, New Hampshire, laboratory is one of seven that comprise ERDC, and a global leader in research and technical solutions that meet operational difficulties encountered in the Earth's cold regions.
“I am deeply honored to be named CRREL’s director,” said Dr. Beckman. “Serving alongside the talented and dedicated research and support teams in Hanover as deputy director has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career, and I am both humbled and excited to take on this new role. There are many challenges to operating in the Arctic and other extreme environments, and I look forward to being part of the team that overcomes them.”
Dr. Beckman previously served as CRREL’s deputy director and prior to that as a research mechanical engineer within the Computational Analysis Branch at ERDC’s Information Technology Laboratory in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
Dr. Beckman retired as a Colonel after thirty years of active-duty U.S. Army service and leadership, holding command and staff positions in Korea, Mississippi, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Colorado, and deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Most notably, Dr. Beckman served as the ERDC Commander from 2018-2019, where his command responsibility included 2,500 government, academic, and contracted personnel with property in excess of $9.3 billion.
“Dr. Beckman is a respected, highly capable leader who has served ERDC with distinction in both civilian and active-duty military capacities,” said Dr. David Pittman, ERDC’s director. “Under his leadership, I am confident that CRREL will continue to push the boundaries of research and deliver solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing our nation.”
Upon his appointment as director, Dr. Beckman was also selected to the Senior Executive Service, a position classification in the United States federal civil service, equivalent to general officer or flag officer rank in the U.S. Armed Forces.
A resident of Hanover, Dr. Beckman holds a Ph.D. in Engineering from Mississippi State University, an MS in Engineering Management from the University of Missouri Rolla, a Master of Strategic Studies (MSS) from the U.S. Army War College, and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the U.S. Military Academy – West Point.
