HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. – Hurlburt Field Airmen volunteered to support the annual Touch-A-Truck event hosted by Navarre High School in Navarre, Florida, Dec. 14, 2024.
The event offered children and their families a hands-on look at eight types of vehicles and heavy machinery, while immersing them into the U.S. Air Force and its special operations culture– fostering community connections and continued education.
“This event is especially exciting for young kids, as it gives them a rare chance to interact with equipment they wouldn’t normally have access to,” said Master Sgt. Dylan Ashley, a 823d RED HORSE Squadron section chief. “Seeing their excitement and curiosity reminds us of the importance of fostering these connections while showcasing our mission and expressing our gratitude for the incredible support we receive.”
Hurlburt Field’s contribution to the Touch-A-Truck event featured a Base Support Emergency Response Vehicle (BSERV), forklift, tractor-trailer and fire truck. Airmen were on site to answer questions, provide demonstrations and ensure attendees’ safety as they explored the vehicles.
“As a strong military community, being able to see our Airmen and the amazing tools they work with is both exciting and eye-opening for the kids and adults alike,” said Amanda Mitchell, Navarre High School Touch-A-Truck event coordinator.
As children explored the vehicles, the Airmen shed light on military life, training and missions while highlighting the importance of serving in the military. For some children, it was their first time meeting a service member.
The event not only allowed children to interact with military vehicles but it enabled local businesses to showcase their equipment. The combination of military and community involvement provided a well-rounded experience for attendees.
At the conclusion of the event, families left with smiles and memories, made with the help of Airmen from Hurlburt Field and their equipment. The Touch-A-Truck event served as a reminder of the importance of community engagement and the role it plays in shaping the next generation.
