The 115th Fighter Wing has been awarded the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Voluntary Protection Program Star status making it one of only two flying wings in the Air National Guard and Air Combat Command to receive the prestigious award.
The VPP Star is OSHA's highest level of recognition awarded to employers and employees who demonstrate exemplary achievement in the prevention and control of occupational safety and health hazards.
“Throughout the past four years, the organization has undergone a monumental transformation with the conversion to the F-35 Lightning II, requiring a comprehensive review and update of occupational safety, explosive, and flight safety programs,” said Chief Master Sgt. Tom Egstad, the superintendent of the 115th Fighter Wing Safety Office. “While the organization has completed nearly $130 million in construction to accommodate the new aircraft, it also required a top to bottom revamp of the wing’s safety and health management system.”
This is the fourth time the 115th Fighter Wing has earned the VPP Star rating since it first participated in the program in 2006. One of the best practices leading to the award was the creation of the first Air National Guard joint safety management dashboard, a management system encompassing all three organizations within the Wisconsin Air National Guard.
“This capability is not found anywhere within the United States Air Force,” said Egstad. “The platform was a home-grown innovation and a true team effort by all the Wisconsin Air National Guard safety and health professionals.”
Prior to the VPP assessment, the 115th Fighter Wing safety team hosted representatives from the DoD Safety Management Center of Excellence in February 2024 where it was noted that the 115th Fighter Wing consistently exceeded safety program performance standards.
“Participation in the VPP has significantly improved our safety and health program on base,” said Lt. Col. Timothy Dyer, the chief of safety at the 115th Fighter Wing. “The safety and health team worked years preparing for this evaluation and the entire organization rose to the challenge making this our best performance to date.”
Representatives from the 115th Fighter Wing’s safety office accepted the award this past year during the wing’s safety stand up day on Sept. 11, 2024, at Truax Field.
