    JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. – A Reserve Soldier assigned to the Army Non-commissioned Officer Academy at ASA-Dix has passed away due to injuries sustained during a motor vehicle accident April 20.

    Sgt. 1st Class Mary Russell, originally from Rome, N.Y., died when the motorcycle she was riding was struck by a bus on the joint base.

    Russell was assigned to the NCO Academy as the Test Control Officer. Her prior duties at the school included Senior Small Group Leader for the Warriors Leaders Course as well as Course Manager for the WLC.

    She arrived at, then, Fort Dix in March 2006, and was preparing for a new assignment which she was to depart for in three weeks.

    Having proudly served 18 years in the service of the United States Army, Russell was a veteran of Desert Storm.

    Born August 25, 1964, in Rome, the daughter of Leonard and Evelyn Burke Russell, Sr., she was a graduate of Central Square High School.

    Surviving are her mother, of Rome; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Rebecca and Melvin Drake, Richmond, Va.; Linda Russell, Connie and Richard Conover and Laurie Dyer, all of Rome; Christine and Martin Webb, Cleveland, N.Y.; five brothers and two sisters-in-law, Leonard Russell, Jr., Camden, N.J.; Scott Russell, Rome; Daniel and Diane Russell, Calcium, N.Y.; Thomas Russell, Rome; Timothy and Sandy Russell, Camden, N.J.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

    She also leaves behind many friends and comrades whom have served with her throughout her career.

    Joint base officials extend their deepest condolences to Russell's family and friends.

    Funeral services with military honors were held at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., in Camden, N.J., April 27. Interment services were held at Maple Flats Cemetery, Cleveland, N.Y., also April 27.

    A memorial service in tribute to Russell will be held at the Joint Base Chapel on ASA-Dix May 4, at 2 p.m.
