    MC2 Darren S. Cordoviz, USN

    U.S. Navy Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Darren Cordoviz is a native of San Fernando Pampanga, Philippines. By the age of 16, he and his family immigrated to Menlo Park, CA in 2016. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Sept. 19, 2019 and completed basic training in Great Lakes, Illinois on November 22, 2019. Following his graduation, he then reported to Training Support Center, Great Lakes, Illinois and graduated from the Surface Common Core “A” School on Dec. 19, 2019.
    Cordoviz then reported as a PACT Sailor assigned to the Arleigh-Burke class, guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) forward-deployed in Yokosuka, Japan on Jan. 2, 2020. During his time aboard, he managed seamanship, ship’s navigation, security watches, day to day deck operations, flight deck operations and small boat operations.
    In Oct. 1, 2020 he then reported to Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY) as a visitor control center clerk for the installation’s security department and became a section leader for one of four watch teams. While fulfilling his watch duties, he also worked with the CFAY Public Affairs team and committed himself to striking the Mass Communication Specialist rating. Cordoviz received on the job training and directly contributed to CFAY’s communications objectives by providing photographic and video coverage of on-base events, military exercises, distinguished visitor visits and host nation engagement activities.

    He then struck the Mass Communication Specialist rating on Jan. 7, 2023 and received his orders to the Defense Information School (DINFOS) onboard Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. While attending as a student, he applied and was selected for the Advanced Military Visual Journalism (AMVJ) program at Syracuse University on Apr. 21, 2023. He then graduated from the Mass Communication Foundations course on Jun. 15, 2023.
    Following his training, Cordoviz reported to the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York on Jul. 20, 2023 where he attended the Advanced Military Graphic Design course as one of four U.S. Navy military students. He participated in advanced studies involving graphic design, motion design, sound design, immersive design and multimedia production. He then graduated from the AMVJ program on May 8, 2024.
    Cordoviz is currently assigned to the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) homeported in Norfolk, Virginia where he currently serves as a content developer and multimedia creative director for Truman’s Media department.
    Petty Officer Cordoviz’s personal decorations include the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (gold star in lieu of second award) and the Good Conduct Medal.
