BRUNEI (Dec. 12, 2024) – The submarine tender Emory S. Land (AS 39) departed from Brunei after a regularly scheduled port call, Dec. 12, 2024. Brunei was the 13th port call of Emory S. Land’s current deployment, which began May 17.
“It was an honor to visit such a welcoming country with friendly personnel and a relaxed culture for the Sailors to enjoy,” said Capt. Kenneth Holland, commanding officer of Emory S. Land. “This visit exemplifies the strength of U.S.-Brunei relations spanning over 40 years, originating to 1984.”
While in port, Sailors had the opportunity to take part in a community relations event (COMREL), to volunteer at the Brunei Pet Shelter. Helping the shelter’s employees clean the facility and take care of the animals.
“The main reason I went on this COMREL was not only for the dogs, but also for the community,” said Hull Maintenance Technician 2nd Class Joshua Farley. “The shelter was a lot larger than the ones I’ve been to before, and the dogs had free-range to go wherever they please at the shelter. Since they didn’t have cages, we spent most of our time cleaning their rooms and did some gardening.”
Emory S. Land is on deployment supporting the U.S. 7th Fleet, the U.S. Navy’s largest forward deployed numbered fleet, operating with allies and partners in preserving a free and open Indo-Pacific region. Emory S. Land provides expeditionary intermediate-level maintenance, services, and logistics support to deployed submarines.
Guam is home to the U.S. Navy's only submarine tenders, USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) and USS Frank Cable (AS 40), as well as Los Angeles-class attack submarines. The submarine tenders provide maintenance, hotel services and logistical support to submarines and surface ships in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operation. The submarines and tenders are maintained as part of the U.S. Navy's forward-deployed submarine force and are capable of meeting global operational requirements.
