For the first time, the Navy Reservists in Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center Jacksonville recently shifted from their typical two-day drill weekend schedule to a four-day drill schedule at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida.

This shift was part of an ongoing effort to better integrate Reservists with their active-duty counterparts in NAVSUP FLCJ. The effort led by Capt. Roger Dube, Navy Reserve NAVSUP FLCJ Commanding Officer, began with the collaboration at the captain-level with Dube’s active-duty counterpart Capt. Matthew Bolls, NAVSUP FLCJ Commanding Officer.

“Recognizing the value of this approach, we extended the collaboration to our executive officers, which proved to be highly effective,” Capt. Dube said. “This led to further development of the initiative, introducing it to the senior enlisted, where our Reserve component enlisted personnel received sponsorship from active component enlisted members for Sailor 360, command physical training, and logistics support training at the waterfront.”

To facilitate this fuller integration, Capt. Dube changed the drill weekend schedule from the standard monthly two-day drill on Saturday and Sunday to a four-day drill from Thursday to Sunday every other month.

“The shift to four-day drill weekends was a particular concern, as we expected weekday participation to be low due to civilian job commitments and schooling,” Capt. Dube said. “Yet, the initiative was met with enthusiasm that surpassed our expectations, and the influx of positive feedback from our unit members has been heartening. They appreciate the opportunity to work outside the confines of a training classroom, collaborating with their active-duty counterparts, which has boosted morale and given them a sense of pride while contributing to a greater cause.”

This marks the first instance of a Navy Reserve Fleet Logistics Center unit integrating efforts from the commanding officer down to the senior enlisted level. Dube notes the integration is already improving his Reservists warfighter and warfighting readiness and strengthening the relationship between the active-duty and Reserve Sailors.

“It is great to see the collaboration and integration efforts among our active-duty Sailors and our reserve counterparts,” Capt. Bolls said. “These efforts will enhance our warfighter readiness, help maintain operational continuity, increase Sailor morale, and create more connective tissue between the active and reserve components. We fight as one unit so it only makes sense that we train as one as well.”

“I am optimistic that integration will provide our Sailors with an enjoyable and significant experience, leading to an exceptionally high level of warfighting readiness,” Capt. Dube said. “FLCJ recognizes the importance of being one team and the advantages this initiative has delivered to the command. We are hopeful that it will endure for many years ahead.”
