COPPERAS COVE, Texas - Maj. Gen. Charles A. Anderson, Division West Commander, briefs more than 160 Contingency Contracting team Soldiers that are slated to deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq from different post within the U.S. at the Cinergy Theater in Copperas Cove April 23.

This training is very important because it keeps the Soldiers aware of their responsibilities as contractors, Anderson said.

The training is given over a four day period.

After the training the Soldiers are certified as contracting representatives for their unit, Maj. Luke Bess, 613th Contingency Contracting Team Leader said. The training also allows the Soldiers to be prepared for writing contracts while deployed, added Bess.

There are two parts that each soldier must be certified in, said Bess. One portion is taken on the Internet and the other is in the classroom.

Bess said the classroom certifications are good until the soldier leave the Army; however, the Internet portion can be completed more than once to refresh each soldier's memory.

There are more than 25 classes that are given to the Soldiers during these four days, said Bess. Contracting Officer Representatives Familiarization, Commander Emergency Response Program and Project Purchase Officer Familiarization are just a few classes that are given, said Bess. The Performance Work Statement training is one of the most important classes that are given during the training, he said.

Performance Work Statements specifies what the individual must do in order to establish contracts through the Army, Bess added.

The training is used to help contractors write contracts for Forward Operating Bases in Iraq and Afghanistan, said Bess. The contracts can cover anything from gate guards to dining facilities.

Being one of the most highly deployed jobs in the Army this training is given only when needed, Bess said.

Bess said that this training does not reduce the amount of civilian contractors throughout the Army, but it helps the Army manage the civilian contractors working with the military.

In garrison the Soldiers oversee contracts for work on the installation, said Bess. "In Iraq and Afghanistan we write and administer contracts for coalition forces."

"Contingency Contracting Unit Training is the most important training that contracting professionals can offer to the war fighters," said Lt. Col. Tonie D. Jackson, 901st Contracting Battalion commander. "It is so important that we are on the same sheet of paper as it pertains to contracting and contract oversight. CZUT is a comprehensive training package that we offer to the units that are deploying so they are better equipped to perform their non-kinetic mission better," said Jackson.

"We provide outstanding training to outstanding Soldiers," Jackson said.

There were three units slated to go to Iraq and two units scheduled to go to Afghanistan that attended the training. The training will help prepare the Soldiers for writing contracts and dealing with civilian contractors on different FOB's throughout Iraq and Afghanistan.
