U.S. CENTRAL COMMAND AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY – The 386th Expeditionary Operations Support Squadron airfield management flight plays an integral role in maintaining the safety and efficiency of the airfield.

The airfield management flight, a seven-person team, is tasked with 24/7 operations for 365 days a year to keep the airfield operational and running smoothly.

One of the ways the team ensures the airfield is safe and ready for operations is by conducting daily airfield inspections of the 52-million-square-foot airfield, which includes inspecting aircraft parking, airfield markings, general pavement and infrastructure and the runway arresting system.

The airfield management team is also responsible for the oversight, implementation, training and enforcement of the airfield driving program. Collectively, the team is in charge of managing and training over 800 airfield drivers.

In addition to the airfield driving and their daily inspection, the team is also responsible for reviewing every flight plan prior to any aircraft departure.

“Our team’s work directly supports the flying missions at our deployed location,” said an airfield operations flight commander assigned to the 386th EOSS. “We input flight plans into the system and ultimately approve aircraft to operate on the airfield.”

In order to execute their day-to-day tasks, airfield management collaborates with units such as the command post, tower, and maintenance teams.

Operating in a deployed environment presents unique challenges, including adjusting to a complex airfield layout and unique local conditions. However, the team continuously adapts and is equipped to identify and address any challenges that could impact mission success.

Their dedication to maintaining safe and efficient airfield operations makes them a critical part of the 386th AEW mission of delivering combat power.
