The 374th Operations Support Squadron aircrew flight equipment team is finalizing the transition to the MBU-20/P oxygen mask for all C-130J Super Hercules aircrew and operational support flyers at Yokota Air Base, Japan, Jan. 30.
Replacing the MBU-12/P with the MBU-20/P enhances standardization, fleet-wide uniformity and reduces costs while providing an optimal fit for aircrew members.
The MBU-20/P includes a lightweight hard shell and low-profile design, offering increased durability and a more customized fit compared to its predecessor. Its improved functionality allows aircrew to maintain comfort and operational efficiency.
“In terms of functionality, the [MBU-12/P and MBU-20/P] are relatively the same,” said Staff Sgt. Coy Dunkle, 374th OSS aircrew flight equipment craftsman. “The 20/P does tend to fit better for most aircrew due to its soft shell material supported by a metal casing.”
The outgoing MBU-12/P oxygen masks were first introduced in the late 1960s as part of the original aircrew eye respiratory protection system. This system was made to safeguard aircrew from exposure in the event of a chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear attack.
“Now we have a whole new [AERPS] system and the 20/P is the primary mask we use for it,” said Tech. Sgt. Joseph Lopez, 374th OSS aircrew flight equipment section chief.
AFE specialists have been actively issuing and fitting the new masks to aircrew, ensuring a seamless transition of the new gear. The transition to the MBU-20/P underscores the 374th OSS’ commitment to optimizing equipment for mission readiness.
“We’re responsible for providing lifesaving gear to our aircrew,” said Lopez. “This mask transition is just part of the effort and everyone has been on board with it.”
The 374th OSS continues to prioritize the safety, efficiency and standardization of its operations, ensuring aircrew members are equipped with the best tools to maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific.
