FORT CAVAZOS, Texas – Texas lawmakers received a "boots-on-the-ground" perspective as they gained firsthand experience with military operations, facilities, and the daily life and duties of troopers with the 1st Cavalry Division and 3rd Cavalry Regiment during Texas Legislative Day at Fort Cavazos on Jan. 31, 2025.
The event fosters collaboration between military leadership and elected officials, offering legislators a deeper understanding of service members' challenges, responsibilities, and daily lives. Hosted by military leaders and the Greater Killeen Chamber of Commerce, the event included demonstrations of military equipment, briefings on key issues, and opportunities for lawmakers to engage with soldiers.
“This day is important because it gives legislators a firsthand understanding of our needs, encouraging them to advocate for continued funding in Congress. This support ensures we have the necessary equipment to deploy, fight and win the nation’s wars,” said 1st Lt. Jakob Robertson of the 1st Cavalry Division, 6th Battalion, 56th Air Defense Artillery Regiment.
Troopers staged and displayed various military fighting vehicles, including an M2A4 Bradley, an M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams, an M109 Paladin, a Stryker, a Sergeant Stout, and an AH-64 Apache. The display created an interactive experience between the legislators and the troopers.
“To maintain this helicopter [AH-64 Apache], it takes a lot of time, blood, sweat, and money. This day means a lot. The legislators, on a regular day, hear what we do; they see what we do, but they don’t get to experience what we do. This is our opportunity to show them that this service is what we provide for them,” said Chief Warrant Officer 4 Matthew Colon, aviation maintenance officer with the 1CD, 1st BN, 227th Aviation Regiment.
In addition to interacting with troopers and their military vehicles, legislators toured the Warrior Skills Training Center and experienced the latest in simulated training exercises.
“It’s extremely beneficial for our legislators to come down and see our training facilities. When they can see what’s happening in the community, it’s easier for them to make decisions that will benefit the troopers here at Fort Cavazos. It’s boots on the ground with the legislators, seeing what boots on the ground for a trooper looks like day to day,” said Shannon Boldman, facility manager of the Warrior Skills Training Center.
