    YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan –

The 374th Communications Squadron held training for Airmen across different units with their first-ever Communications Fly-Away Kit 101 course at Yokota Air Base, Japan, Jan. 13-16.

The course covered the fundamentals of setting up a mobile and dynamic network, which serves as a vital tool used to communicate through classified and unclassified networks.

“We need to be able to communicate and operate, especially in the Pacific,” said U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Gibson Kaiyasit Chomphutip, 374th CS tyber transport technician. “In a contested environment, the CFAKs allow us to keep that connection.”

The goal of the course is to equip Airmen with the skills to establish necessary connections and/or communication in the event of an outage to safeguard and protect the critical capability in deployed environments.

“Sometimes the only way to get a hold of someone is by setting up these connections,” said Senior Airman Daniel Strouse, 374th Contracting Squadron contracting officer. “If we’re in a scenario where nobody else can set up, Airmen certified from this training can help keep us connected.”

Approximately 80% of the course involved hands-on training, where students learned how to set up CFAKs, which included learning how to configure routers and switches, ensure proper physical connections, troubleshoot errors, and provide customer service.

“It’s like solving a puzzle,” Strouse added. “You know what the issue is; you just need to figure out how to solve it.”

At the end of the course, Airmen were recognized for their hard work and dedication. Lt. Col. Steven Lee, 374th CS commander, presented certificates to the participants, certifying their newly acquired skills.

"When a situation occurs and arises, you have the confidence to know what your options are,” said Lee. “What this course does is help produce those options and gives you confidence to be able to proceed."
