Francis S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base, Westhampton Beach, N.Y. — New York Air National Guard Senior Master Sergeant Noel Fontanez, a Manorville resident, promoted to the rank of chief master sergeant at a ceremony on January 31 at the 106th Rescue Wing firehouse on Francis S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base.

Fontanez joined the 106th as a structural craftsman with the Civil Engineer Squadron in 1996. In 2013, he became the structures supervisor, followed by the heavy repair superintendent in 2020. Fontanez served as the squadron operations flight superintendent and installation facility manger since April 2022. He now serves as the senior enlisted leader of the 106th Rescue Wing Civil Engineer Squadron.

During his time as the operations flight superintendent and installation facility manager, Fontanez led a team that is responsible for the operations, maintenance, sustainment, renovation and modernization of buildings, structures, and pavements. Fontanez also provided fully qualified and highly trained professional military craftsmen and heavy equipment operators for worldwide and domestic engineering and operations support.

Lt. Col. Sean Marshall, 106th Civil Engineer Squadron commander, praised Fontanez in his remarks.

“Noel has been a mentor to me, he has helped me, and I really rely on him as a confidant, as my number two. Really, he’s in charge and he just lets me go out and say things. That’s the kind of person he is, and I am very grateful that I have the opportunity to have him as my SEL (Senior Enlisted Leader) and to be able to promote him to chief today.”

In his remarks, Fontanez thanked the wing leadership, distinguished guests, and the Airmen he leads for all their support.

“I’m going into the last chapter of my military career, but my plan now is to make sure that everyone that I’m charged with and taking care of, is ready for their next chapter. Thank you all. I appreciate you all coming out.”

The 106th Rescue Wing, based at F.S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base in Westhampton Beach, New York, operates and maintains the HC-130J Combat King II search and rescue aircraft, and the HH-60W Jolly Green II search and rescue helicopter. The 106th Rescue Wing is home to a special warfare squadron with pararescuemen and combat rescue officers, specializing in rescue and recovery, and deploys for domestic and overseas operations.
