PATRICK SPACE FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Space Launch Delta 45 is renowned for managing the world’s busiest spaceport, advancing the nation’s space operations and capabilities. However, its mission extends far beyond the launch pad, exemplifying adaptability, collaboration, and dedication to service.

A recent demonstration of this versatility came from U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Ryan Longoria, 45th Security Forces Squadron military working dog handler, and U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Spencer Contreras, SLD 45 public affairs specialist, who provided critical support at the funeral of the late 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, on Jan. 9.

Longoria along with MWD Kkody, were assigned to a security detail at Washington National Cathedral in Washington D.C., conducting thorough sweeps of large areas to ensure the safety of all in attendance.

“It was truly an honor to be part of the security detail for President Carter’s funeral. Opportunities like this are rare—it’s a once-in-a-career experience,” said Longoria. “While the circumstances were unfortunate, being able to contribute to such an important event is something I’ll never forget.”

Both Airmen remained on a six-month “stand-by” status, during which they were not permitted to take leave. When news of President Carter’s passing was received, they were expected to be mission-ready and on location within 24 hours.

“I always strive to put my best foot forward, not just for myself, but to reflect positively on our team and the work we do,” said Longoria. “With our six-month stand-by status, we had to be prepared at any moment, and when the call came, we had less than 24 hours to be on-site and ready to support the mission.”

Ensuring security at a high-profile event requires precision, coordination, and teamwork.

“When I arrived on location, Kkody and I were assigned to a designated area to conduct thorough sweeps, ensuring the safety of everyone in attendance,” said Longoria. “Events like this require seamless teamwork, with every member playing a critical role in maintaining security. I was honored to contribute and proud to represent both my unit and Patrick Space Force Base.”

As a public affairs specialist, Contreras played a crucial role in documenting the event, capturing both its historical significance and the deep emotions of those in attendance at both The Carter Center located in Atlanta, GA, and President Jimmy Carter's final resting place at Plains, GA.

Contreras was one of 20 visual information team members, each entrusted with a vital role in documenting the event. Positioned strategically across key locations, he captured the Honor Guard—composed of service members from every branch of the military—as well as the solemn procession of the late president’s body as it was brought to lie in state.

“Supporting this event was an incredibly unique opportunity,” said Contreras. “Being able to document the series of somber and dignified ceremonies celebrating Jimmy Carter’s life and service will certainly be a highlight of my career.”

After Carter departed The Carter Center for the State Funeral at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C., Contreras and his team took their positions in preparation for his final resting place in Plains, GA.

“I was very proud to be representing PSFB at a national event of that magnitude,” said Contreras. “It was great to show that we not only support the launch mission, but are also capable of supporting missions from across the Department of Defense.”

Longoria and Contreras’s dedication to duty and adaptability highlight the Delta’s focus on developing highly trained, resilient Guardians and Airmen. By providing professional growth opportunities and diverse operational roles, it showcases a commitment to supporting and empowering team members.

Through these efforts, SLD 45 proves that our dedication goes beyond assured access to space. From space to solemn ceremonies, we are here to deliver excellence across every mission set, standing as a testament to our commitment to service, resilience, and readiness.
