COLMAR, France – A commemoration ceremony was held to honor the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Colmar at Colmar, France, Feb. 1-2, 2025. The ceremony highlighted the bravery and heroism by Allies during World War II, maintaining a steadfast commitment to global peace and security, and ranged from formal ceremonies to community events, with a focus on remembering the lives lost and the sacrifices made that were attended by dignitaries, service members and French citizens.

From Jan. to Feb. 1945, one of the most important battles during the final months of World War II was fought in France where the Battle of Colmar marked a significant moment in the Allied effort to drive German forces away. The battle was a decisive engagement that saw the 3rd Infantry Division play a critical role in their victory against German forces in the heavily fortified Colmar Pocket.

“It’s both a profound honor and a heavy responsibility”, said Staff Sgt. Holden Schubel, a combat engineer assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. “[It’s important] to carry forward the courage and sacrifice of those who came before us.”

The Dogface Soldiers, known for their resilience and determination, encountered relentless resistance as they advanced through the region, fighting through harsh winter conditions, and urban and rural combat; and 80 years later, the battle's anniversary being held to honor the strength of alliance and dedicated resolve borne out of World War II and forged over eight decades of combat-credible deterrence and defense.

The bond between the U.S. military and the people of France remains strong, and is evident in Colmar, where the 3rd ID's efforts in 1945 brought freedom to a town that had been under occupation for years. The citizens of Colmar and surrounding communities continue to express their gratitude to those who liberated them, with many taking part in the events to share their thanks.

“I am proud of being here, and to show our nation’s courage, gratitude and respect to the Soldiers before us”, said Pfc. Joshua Connor, a combat medic assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division. “It’s my duty to be my best self at all times.”

The Battle of Colmar's 80th anniversary honors all those who fought for the liberation of Europe. By preserving values that are cherished, the responsibility to carry on what drove the Allies forward 80 years ago will continue in the present day.
