    Story by Capt. Christian Little

    93rd Air Ground Operations Wing

The Air Force’s 93d Air Ground Operations Wing (AGOW) initiated the Command, Control and Communications University (C3U) in partnership with Air National Guard Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) stakeholders in November 2024.

The course enables TACP and their special warfare mission support team members to become more proficient in emerging communications equipment implementation and provides expertise in applying this technology in future Command and Control (C2) operations.

“We’re looking at what will be required for future operations, and we have increased our communication capabilities and resiliency to meet those demands,” said Master Sgt. Tyler Sorensen, 93d AGOW TACP current operations planner. “TACP C2 is extremely resilient and adaptable, and this course gives students the expertise to take full advantage of their equipment wherever they are.”

TACP have been developing how they can provide resilient, mobile command and control to provide additional capabilities for the C2 infrastructure. These TACP capabilities diversify the Air Force’s C2 networks which creates a more dependable operational framework.

“We have identified a C2 enabling function that we can provide,” Sorensen explained. “Now that we’ve been provided the equipment we need to do that, we need to rapidly get the training and expertise on that equipment to be able to perform efficiently.”

The course goes beyond providing instruction on equipment use, it provides the tactical expertise to implement it in new ways.

“This course doesn’t just teach students how to use the equipment,” Sorensen said. “It teaches the theory behind it, which allows each student to employ it to best suit their current mission-set.”

The C3U course is in a development phase where students, instructors and auditors can optimize the training to ensure Airmen receive the training they need to execute ground-based C2 in support of future operations.

“We’re in a testing phase,” Sorensen said. “So each iteration, we can build on the course and arrive at a final product that will be a tailored and effective course for C2 equipment, theory and tactics application.”

C3U students explained how they can implement the knowledge they gained through the instruction in real-world deployed operations.

“I think C3U is a great course for communicators to better understand how to support a special warfare unit and determining what the needs are for a tactical unit in the Air Force,” said Staff Sgt. Andrew Hosenfeld, 274th Air Support Operations Squadron special warfare mission support Airman. “It helps you be a little bit more creative in providing solutions to the warfighter and how we can be a part of that process.”
