Air Force Special Warfare (AFSPECWAR) Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) teams from the 93d Air Ground Operations Wing’s 15th Air Support Operations Squadron collaborated with Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) TACP teams during exercise Spartan Telegraph from Nov. 12-22, 2024, across Florida’s Gulf Coast.
The exercise was designed to enhance 93d AGOW TACP’s proficiency in passing targeting information through Command and Control (C2) channels to enhance long range kill chains for preparedness in future operations and larger exercises.
“Exercises like Spartan Telegraph are about us really executing the basics organically, and building up proficiency, so that when we show up to Combatant Command level exercises, we add value to the long range kill chain and the C2 infrastructure,” said Senior Master Sgt. Dennis Back, 15th ASOS operations superintendent.
The 93d AGOW incorporated TACP C2 experts from PACAF in the exercise to integrate external perspectives capable of enhancing processes and tactics.
“At the headquarters level, we encourage units to seek out these global partnerships, because they’re one of the best ways to ensure we’re ready to operate in any environment,” said Master Sgt. Michael Cobb, 93d AGOW operations superintendent. “To ensure we have the best tactics, techniques and procedures available, we need to bring in outside teams to expand our operational knowledge and proficiency.”
93d AGOW TACP teams have been identifying future operational requirements and tailoring how they can integrate their capabilities into operational C2 infrastructures.
“The impact is huge, the TACP can grant tactical C2 extension in a very mobile manner which is huge for the survivability of the Air Force’s C2 construct as a whole,” Back said. “As we expand our TACP’s toolkit, we’re looking for areas where we can add value.”
These TACP teams are known as human weapon systems which prioritize an Airman’s proficiency and ability to adapt to emerging battlefield requirements.
“TACP, and AFSPECWAR in general, is positioned to change rapidly, and we’re able to do that, because we’re human weapon systems,” Back said. “This isn’t about making modifications to a steel platform, it’s humans adapting before and at the time of need.”
