Air Force Special Warfare (AFSPECWAR) Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) teams from the 93d Air Ground Operations Wing conducted a short-notice long-range communications exercise across eight operating locations across America from Feb. 10-14, 2025.
The exercise was designed to identify best practices for establishing long-range communications networks quickly and pinpoint necessary training and equipment areas for improvement.
“The things we’re looking at is how we can ensure we have access to all of our waveforms and how we disseminate orders and manage command and control of our organization,” said an 18th Air Support Operations Group TACP. “Being able to stand up those large, distributed command and control and communications networks with what you have on hand at that moment becomes paramount.”
Executing operations with short notice provides these TACP units an opportunity to tackle realistic challenges they could face in deployed operations.
“The exercise is combat replicative,” the 18th ASOG TACP explained. “The shortened timeline forces the creative problem-solving process. It doesn’t allow you to get comfortable and go ahead and start finding where your equipment is or the best solution, but it forces you to work with the solution you have right now, which is an invaluable skill within AFSPECWAR.”
To establish these long-range communication capabilities within the required timeframes, units needed the correct serviceable equipment and software on hand and the technical knowledge to implement it.
“These exercises allow us to test our equipment in short notice to make sure it’s working and we’re able to support at a moment’s notice,” said Staff Sgt. Raymond Hernandez, 15th Air Support Operations Squadron TACP. “My takeaway from this is that we need to have our gear ready and accessible at all times, and that we need to be proficient on it and be ready to execute.”
TACP are experts in tactical communications and maintaining redundant and clear communication pathways for mission accomplishment, and these exercises enable them to ensure their forces are prepared to execute at any time.
“As a community within AFSPECWAR, TACP will find a way to solve a problem that’s put in front of them,” the 18th ASOG TACP said.
