SAN DIEGO – Cmdr. Dan Sledz was relieved by Cmdr. Robert Schmidt as commanding officer of the Independence-variant littoral combat ship USS Savannah (LCS 28) Blue during a change of command ceremony held at Naval Base San Diego, Feb. 14. Capt. Jose A. Roman, Commodore, Littoral Combat Ship Squadron One, was the presiding officer and guest speaker at the ceremony.
During Sledz time in command, Savannah Blue participated in North American Maritime Security Initiative, Large Scale Exercise 2023 being the only U.S. Navy asset in the exercise with Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. Coast Guard. On their maiden deployment to U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations, Savannah Blue safely transited over 26,000 nautical miles to include South China Sea operations, conducted 13 sea and anchor details and 13 port calls. The crew of Savannah enhanced warfighting during operationally-relevant real-world tasking, while also completing 10 theater exercises with Fleet-visible success, pushing the boundaries of Littoral Combat Ship tactics, as well as interoperability with allies and partners.
“Change of command ceremonies are a unique opportunity to recognize the achievements of a Commanding Officer and his crew while formally transferring responsibility, accountability and authority to the incoming Commander," said Capt. Jose Roman, commodore, Littoral Combat Ship Squadron One. “Dan, you led Savannah Blue Crew and you should be proud of all that you and the crew have accomplished. Fair winds and following seas as you transfer to your next command."
During the ceremony, Sledz was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his superior accomplishments.
Sledz is a native of Long Island, NY. He graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer and Information Systems Technology in 2006, and received his commission through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program. Following his commissioning and acceptance into the Immediate Graduate Education Program, he reported for a year of study at the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA, and completed a Master of Science degree in Modeling, Virtual Environments, and Simulation.
Savannah is homeported in San Diego as a part of Littoral Combat Ship Squadron One. Savannah is currently on a routine deployment to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations. Littoral combat ships are fast, optimally manned, mission-tailored surface combatants that operate in near-shore and open-ocean environments, winning against 21st-century threats. LCS integrate with joint, combined, manned and unmanned teams to support forward-presence, maritime security, sea control, and deterrence missions around the globe.
